Police set up scanner to check pupils for weapons
Benedict Moore-Bridger, Evening Standard
03.07.08
Children in Purley had to pass through an airport-style security scanner as police continued a clampdown on knife crime.
The move was part of Operation Blunt 2, launched six weeks ago after a series of killings.
Around 20 police and community support officers were involved in the searches in Surrey, which took place as the children made their way home from school.
Scotland Yard said officers had now searched nearly 27,000 youths since the operation began and seized 528 knives.
There have been 1,214 arrests, 813 of which were for possession of weapons and a further 217 for knife-related crimes.
Mayor Boris Johnson said of the police operation: "It is not a short-term whirlwind offensive against knives.
"It is a sustained visible longterm operation and it is vital to recognise that we cannot hope to succeed by police work alone."

Anti-surveillance demonstrators hold Stockholm rally
Published: 3 Jul 08 17:10 CET
A large crowd gathered in central Stockholm on Thursday afternoon to demonstrate against Sweden's controversial new surveillance law, which continues to generate heated debate more than two weeks after it was approved by the Riksdag.
Reinfeldt: critics 'don't understand' snoop law (3 Jul 08)
Security Service to examine FRA leak (2 Jul 08)
Swedish firm: 'New law will drive businesses out of the country' (30 Jun 08)
An estimated 300-400 people congregated at Mynttorget in Gamla Stan to voice their disaproval of the new law, which will enable the National Defence Radio Establishment (FRA) to monitor all email and phone calls crossing Sweden's borders.
The protest action organized by the newly formed Banana Republic network brought together leading figures from the opposition Green and Left parties, as well as leaders from the youth organizations of the majority of parties represented in parliament.
Speaking to The Local, Green Party spokeswoman Maria Wetterstrand said that her party was far more scathing in its criticism of the law than potential coalition partners Mona Sahlin and her Social Democrat party.
"Mona has said she will tear up the law should they win the next election. But they will probably replace it with a similar one. We will make sure that doesn't happen," she said.
Wetterstrand also took the opportunity to stock up on some fruit as the event organizers handed out bananas among the crowd.
"They did give me one," said Wetterstrand.
"But I don't think Sweden is on the verge of becoming a banana republic."
As the sun beat down and a samba band prepared to play, Pirate Party leader Rickard Falkvinge addressed the crowd as "my fellow countrymen from the Banana Republic."
The demonstration was the first of two anti-FRA law events scheduled to be held in the capital on Thursday.
During the evening, regulars from the city centre's champagne set are planning to join forces at Café Opera to "party against mass surveillance". At the bar guests will be able to order cocktails named after both the current and previous defence ministers, Mikael Odenberg and Sten Tolgfors, both of whom have argued in favour of the law.

FBI to descend on Denver for Dem event | Politics West:
"Earlier in the interview, regarding the possibility of disruptive protests at the convention, Davis said the FBI is looking at 'tactics and groups similar to what we've seen in conventions in the past and other major meetings' such as 'blockage of streets and attempts to disrupt traffic flows, that sort of thing.'
Davis would not say whether undercover FBI agents have joined protests groups or attended their meetings.
More generally, Davis acknowledged the possibility the convention could draw criminal activity - and that law enforcement partner agencies were aware of that."

Gay Marriage - San Francisco
[from Google News]
We went down and checked out the scene at San Francisco's City Hall this morning - not much happening. In fact, if there are a bunch of protesters on the news tonight, it will be because the protesters only start acting up when the cameras are on, and because the news likes to show... well, protesters! The reality was, that there was much more love flowing around city hall today than hate. That's a good thing. Nothing to see here folks, move along.

Lawmakers say Capitol computers hacked by Chinese - Yahoo! News
Secret government officials discouraged U.S. congressman from disclosing Chinese espionage... but why? Public servants should be forced to testify upon command.
Lawmakers say Capitol computers hacked by Chinese - Yahoo! News:
"Wolf said the FBI had told him that computers of other House members and at least one House committee had been accessed by sources working from inside China. The Virginia Republican suggested that Senate computers could have been attacked as well.
He said the hacking of computers in his Capitol Hill office began in August 2006, that he had known about it for a long time and that he had been discouraged from disclosing it by people in the U.S. government he refused to identify.
'The problem has been that no one wants to talk about this issue,' he said. 'Every time I've started to do something I've been told 'You can't do this.' A lot of people have made it very, very difficult.'
The FBI and the White House declined to comment."

Oak Grove, OR - Peace Rally/War Protest
Northwest: June 21st, 2008
Peace Vigil in Oak Grove 1st and 3rd Saturdays 12 pm to 1 pm
Even the people in strip mall territory are standing up for PEACE!
Come stand up with us from 12 noon to 1 pm on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month, at the busy corner of McLoughlin and Oak Grove Blvds, by the Fred Meyer store, in Oak Grove Oregon. Oak Grove is the small residential community just south of Milwaukie, OR, which is a few miles south of Portland city limits, on the east side of the Willamette river.
Bring your own sign if you have one; if not some extras may be available. Some people bring flowers as well -- if you have 'em, bring 'em! They attract a lot of attention from passersby in cars and on foot.
The only reason the US withdrew from Viet Nam was because of negative public opinion. Come demonstrate your feelings about the war in Iraq and make the killing stop! IF NOT NOW, WHEN?

Protest the Insurance Companies' Convention in SF!
Healthcare YES! Insurance Companies NO!
Protest the Insurance Companies' Convention in SF
Thursday, June 19, 12 Noon
Moscone Center West
4th St at Howard, SF
On June 19, hundreds of people from all walks of life will demonstrate in San Francisco at the national convention of health insurance companies. For years, these companies have bankrupted us, denied us healthcare, and ripped apart the social safety net. Now they want to force themselves down the throats of our 47 million with no health coverage.
We demand single-payer healthcare: equal, comprehensive, low-cost, accessible healthcare for everyone. It would be delivered by today's doctors, clinics, and hospitals, but paid for by a single, publicly-accountable government-operated agency. No insurance companies! In California, it’s SB 840. Nationally, it’s HR 676.
Inside the convention, executives of America's Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) will meet with top political and policy advisors of both parties to create "universal healthcare" by forcing everyone to buy private health insurance. Everyone pays unaffordable premiums, deductibles, and co-pays. Poor people get worse care. Government spends billions to (barely) help poor people pay their premiums. It’s welfare for insurance companies and Katrina-care for us.
Outside, at our demonstration, nationally-recognized advocates and legislators for single-payer healthcare will speak, along with health workers, victims of insurance abuse, long-time union members with no healthcare, seniors for whom Medicare is not enough, and people driven into poverty by healthcare costs.
National attention will be focused on this convention because of the healthcare crisis, so this is a rare opportunity. Everyone knows somebody who has been hurt by insurance companies or the lack of healthcare. Let’s throw these parasites’ sugary words of concern for the uninsured back in their teeth. Healthcare YES! Insurance Companies NO! Please call 415-695-7891 for more information.

ReCreate 68
These folks plan to protest the Democratic National Convention this August in Denver. The name of the event is based on the 1968 Democratic Convention is Chicago, which turned out to be a debacle.
This is what happens when elected leaders stop fulfilling their role as public servants and try to become fascist rulers - the people revolt. Look at what is also happening to John McCain by Ron Paul, despite the media's best efforts to stifle Paul long ago.
The 2008 conventions should be quite interesting, to say the least.
